An honest look
Online platforms like Ethos are a step up from nothing. But for most people, a vetted independent agent finds better rates, more options, and stays in your corner after the policy issues.

To be fair
If that's you, Ethos works. But if you have any health history, need more than $2M, want coverage other than term, or just want a real human who knows your situation — an independent agent is worth the 15-minute phone call.
The real difference
Every carrier rates health conditions differently. An agent knows which carrier is lenient on diabetes, which underwrites sleep apnea well, which has the best rates for former smokers. Ethos can't do that — it has one underwriting algorithm and 1–2 partners.
Applications, medical records requests, lab orders — your agent manages all of it and stays in contact with the carrier so you don't have to chase anyone.
Got healthier? Rates may have dropped. Had another kid? Your coverage need changed. Your agent notices and reaches out. An app doesn't.
When something happens, your family calls a real person who placed the policy and can help navigate the claim process — not a chat widget.
